If a platform requires a user to pass a series of low-friction, high-entropy identity challenges, the cost of entry for a bot-driven or predatory operation spikes. They want low-cost, high-volume access. Deny them that, and they move elsewhere.

The industry needs to stop pretending that this is a moral crusade requiring human intuition. It is a cold, hard engineering challenge. We have the tools to automate the vast majority of this heavy lifting, but we are too attached to the ineffective, moralistic safety theater of the past.
